Cabinetry & Countertops, Separating "Trends" From "Fads"
How do you separate trends from fads when it comes to kitchen cabinetry and countertops? For starters, ask the consumer, which is what rocket research firm Fixr's did in their "Kitchen Remodeling Trends Survey 2010-2011".
Participants were asked to rate designs and products from the least to most trendy. Not surprising, "green" came in first as the most trendy design, which in turn was reflected in product choices.
The majority of consumers in the survey listed stainless steel cabinetry as the most trendy, followed closely by cabinetry constructed with recycled materials, and then maple. Birch, Walnut, colored Melamine, and Cherry occupied the middle slots, while Hickory, Pine, and Oak brought up the rear.
When it comes to countertops, consumers selected engineered stone as the most trendy, with concrete and granite falling close behind. Stainless steel, solid surface, and wood/butcher block were grouped together in the middle, followed by what consumers considered the least trendy in marble, soapstone, laminates, and ceramic tile.
Of course the survey reflects consumer "wants". Cost is often a determining consideration. Due to the recent housing downturn, manufactures have increased their emphasis on lower-end stock and semi-custom cabinetry, while plastic countertops have regained some market share as producers expanded their offerings of ceramic and stone looks.
